PEWAUKEE, Wis. (Thursday, June 3, 2021 ) – (THIS CLASS HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FALL.) On Thursday night, June 10, Waukesha County Technical College is offering a continuing education course, Compassion Fatigue-Covid, to help participants recognize how the pandemic has influenced stress, compassion fatigue and burnout in healthcare.

The course, which will be held in-person on the Pewaukee campus and runs from 6 p.m. to 8:20 p.m., will be led by Cynthia Rasmussen, an instructor in the College’s School of Health and a retired army lieutenant colonel, who specializes in the topic.

Rasmussen will share ways in which those providing patient care can learn to heal, and help them devise a plan to move forward.

The session is intended primarily for those working in the healthcare field, as well as human services, protective services and healthcare students. However – like other continuing education courses at the College -- anyone who is interested in the topic is welcome to sign up, said Karen Boggio, WCTC health education outreach specialist.

For those working in nursing, the session provides two nursing contact hours. (Waukesha County Technical College is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Wisconsin Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.)

Boggio said in recent meetings with healthcare community partners, there has been great interest in finding ways to help those providing patient care learn better ways to cope during the ongoing public health crisis. As a result, the Compassion Fatigue course was developed.

“The School of Health offers a variety of courses for healthcare professionals and others who may benefit from the information presented,” Boggio said. “Course offerings are selected based on feedback from our community partners, WCTC health advisory committee members, current trends in healthcare, research, and identified gaps in knowledge and practice.”
